An ode to a secret place

I've talked about this little place before, and now it looks like it will soon close down forever. So this post is a heads up for all readers in the Göteborg area and also a bit of an eulogy to the kind of stores that becomes rarer and rarer. The store is called Normi garn and opened in 1953. The current owner is the daughter and she is heading for retirment. She too is a rare creature, being quite an eccentric. She is a secretive (she even refuses to say her real name), a smart ass, can come off as rude, but still it is hard not to like her and her fabulous store. It is best known for the yarns, but you can also find rows and rows of fabrics from the 60's and the 70's at unbelievable prices. And there are great notions too to be found if you take the time to dig around for a while.

  3. Noooooo! After seeing the first two photos I thought to myself "Wow, I totally must go here. Must add this to my list of things to see when we eventually travel to Scadiwegia on holiday some day..." only to then read they're closing down. So, so sad. I'd love to have even one metre of some of those vintage fabrics!

I'm amazed you can resist not scooping them all up for Floremark!

  4. I knooow! Though when I interviewed her today, she suddenly said she wanted to clear out most of her stock before she closes, which will take approximately 100 years :D

Hope you will come here in the future! I would love to visit you in London again too. Not sure how/when this will happen, I'm gonna see if I can persuade my boyfriend to try out the Ryan air bargains again with me.

  5. Johanna & Melissa - did you know that Easyjet have just started a service between London & Gothenburg?

I think it's only between Gatwick & Landvetter. Anyway it gives another low-price option to compete with Ryanair.

I'm hoping to make a trip to Normi Garn tomorrow ... haven't been there before, I have to make sure I see it at least once!

  6. What a pity! We had a similar place here in Darmstadt which closed down 2 months ago as the owner who is well in her 80ies thought she finally deserved to enjoy retirement - and she does. But I am missing the store, they just had everything. And just visiting the shop with walls and walls of tiny little drawers was and adventure all by itself.
Also she and her sales ladies were among the few people I meet in real life who estimated my sewing skills ;-)
